Warriors Claim Silver at 2024 OUA Badminton Championship

Pickering, ON - For the second year in a row, the Warriors collect silver at the 2024 OUA Championship.

The Warriors swept their pool play (4-0) against the Bold, Ridgebacks, Varsity Blues, and Gee-Gees. The Warriors dominated the round-robin, winning 80% of their matches and earning eight standing points. As a result, they secured the top spot in pool B and received a bye for the quarter-finals in the playoffs.

During the semifinals, the Warriors competed against the Western Mustangs for the second consecutive year. Harry Soo took his men's singles match in two straight games (21-16, 21-10). In a closely contested match, Kevin Wang (Mississauga/) went head-to-head against Westerns Noah Xu. Despite losing the first match, Wang showed immense resilience and made a strong comeback in the second and third games, ultimately winning the match 2-1 (19-21, 22-20, 23-21). Jenny Lei (Ottawa/) from the women's singles category quickly won in just two sets (21-11, 22-20).
Jessica Cheng and Ashley Wong (Markham/), as well as Nicole Wang (Hamilton/) and Rachel Tang (Markham/), played three games each in the Women's Doubles category and won. The scores for the games were (21-14, 17-21, 21-13) and (12-21, 21-12,28-26). Kyle To (Richmond Hill/) and Darren Choi (Richmond Hill/), the Men's Double team, won their Semifinal match with a flawless 2-0 run, leading the Warriors to the gold medal game.

In the gold medal game, the Warriors faced the Varsity Blues, whom they had already defeated in the round-robin stage. The Warriors had their eyes set on winning the championship, which they had yet to win since 2010. In the men's singles match, Kevin Wang (Mississauga/) had a fantastic performance against Blues Minh Pham, leading Waterloo to a 2-0 (21-8, 21-7) victory. Similarly, in the men's single category, Harry Soo competed against Michael Law in a tough match that lasted three games. However, Harry emerged as the victor with a score of 2-1 (221-14, 12-21, 21-8). Unfortunately, the Warriors were unable to secure a win against the Varsity Blues, resulting in a 6-2 defeat and a silver medal for Waterloo.

Ashley Wong (Markham/) & Harry Soo were named OUA All-Stars for the second year in a row. Kevin Wang (Mississauga/) was named MVP & OUA All-Star. Over the weekend, Wang managed to win ten matches and lost only one, resulting in an impressive record of 10-3.

The Warriors will host the 2024 YONEX Canadian University/College Badminton Championships from March 13 to 16 at the Physical Activities Complex on campus.
