Warriors Badminton claim four medals at University Nationals

The Warriors badminton team took part in the Univeristy and College National Championship from March 18-20 in Oshawa coming away with four medals won.

In men's single, Kevin Wang (Mississauga/) (who was unranked) managed to make it all the way to the final of men's singles, knocking out the number one seed along the way. Wang nearly clinched the title (had two match points himself), but in the end fell to Yunzhi Chen (Toronto) in a 3 set thriller. Clement Chow (North York/) had a notable performance making it to the quarter-finals, but also fell to the eventual champion in three close sets.

In women's singles, Angela Chen fought her way to bronze losing to the eventual champion Eliana Zhang in the semifinal. Notable performance by Jenny Lei (Ottawa/) who faced the eventual champion earlier in the draw, and was the player to push Eliana to 3 games.

In men's double the Warriors had three quarter-finalists Aaron Hsu & Kevin Wang (Mississauga/), Joseph Lu (Waterloo/) & Thomas Dent (Waterloo/), and Tommy Du (Markham/) & Jacob Kim (Markham/)

In women's, Angela Chen and Belle Tuen were able to clinch bronze, losing to the eventual champions in the semifinal match. Notable performances for two other pairs able to reach the quarter-final were Jodi Lee (Richmond Hill/) & Nicole Wang (Hamilton/) as well as Sherry Wu (Kanata/) & Karla Mccallum (Charlottetown/)

In mixed doubles Waterloo had their unranked pair of Aaron Hsu & Belle Tuen defy the odds to reach the final!  The Warriors also had three other pairs reach the quarter-final: Joey Kuang (Toronto/) & Jacob Kim (Markham/), Harry Soo & Nicole Wang (Hamilton/), and Kevin Wang (Mississauga/) & Angela Chen making it 4 out of 8 of the final pairs from the black and gold.

The team event was filled with drama as well as it went down to the wire in the semifinals against York. It came down to the final men's doubles match with the Warriors Aaron Hsu & Thomas Dent (Waterloo/) against York's Samson Tam & Justin Law (West Hill/). It was a back and forth match, with the Warriors being edged 28-26 (extra points) in one of the most exciting matches in University badminton history.
