Warriors honour Don McCrae with naming of men’s basketball team room

The Department of Athletics and Recreation was extremely honoured to name the men's basketball team room after the legendary Don McCrae this evening at the Battle of Waterloo basketball games at the Physical Activities Complex (PAC).

It was a special evening for Don and former members of Warriors basketball, not only for the naming of the locker room but as it was also Mike Moser night honouring the late Moser who tragically passed away midseason in 1975. McCrae was Moser's coach at the time and was able to refocus his group leading them to a championship title that year.

McCrae joined the Department of Athletics and Recreation in 1971 and spent 22 years as the head coach of men's basketball accumulating a record of 462 wins and 252 losses. McCrae led the Warriors to their only National Championship title during the 1974-75 season where Waterloo defeated Manitoba on a last second shot on home court in the PAC, a moment that is forever etched into the floor of Carl Totzke Court.

Throughout his tenure as head coach, McCrae led the Warriors to first place in the standings 11 of his 22 years while also guiding them to six Ontario University Athletics Association (OUAA) Championships. From 1977 until 1984, McCrae was the head coach of the Canadian National women's team, leading them to a fourth place finish at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

As a player McCrae participated in the 1959 Pan American Games and 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, Italy and was a three-time OUAA All-Star. He was also a member of the University of Western Mustangs from 1957 to 1962, capturing two OUAA Championships.

"We are forever grateful for Don's leadership and commitment to our program and his name will forever be associated with greatness at the University of Waterloo," said director of athletics and recreation, Roly Webster. "We are thrilled to be able to name the men's locker room after Don, where our student-athletes will develop fond lifetime memories of their time as a Warrior."
