The Waterloo Warriors men's basketball team split a pair of games this past week, adding another win to their resume in the second half of the year. The Warriors fell on Wednesday night to the visiting Western Mustangs before taking a trip to Toronto where they knocked off the Varsity Blues to pick up their first road regular season win of the year.
On Wednesday night the Warriors ran into a high scoring offense in the Western Mustangs. The visitors jumped out to an early 23-11 lead after one and never looked back. The Warriors got some quality contributions from
Cristian Craciun (Ancaster, ON/) and
Stefan Djukic (Kitchener, ON/) who poured in a team high 15 and 14 points respectively but it was not enough as the Warriors dropped their season series finale with the Mustangs, 88-67 the final.
Looking to bounce back on Saturday evening on the road, the Warriors opened up the game with some great energy on both ends of the floor. Seven Warriors found the scoresheet offensively and as a collective unit, the black and gold stifled the Varsity Blues as the Warriors led 23-11 after one. U of T would not go away however as a bounce back second quarter allowed them to trim the Warriors lead down to just five at the halfway point. Another great defensive quarter by the Warriors paired with some key baskets from
Andrew Cook (Sarnia, ON/) and
Kiran Chadwick-Rupp (Victoria, BC/) helped put the Warriors in front by eight as the game entered the fourth quarter. While the Varsity Blues made a late push, the black and gold were able to stand their ground and pick up the victory by a final score of 69-61.
Leading the way for the Warriors in the contest was
Kanayo Nnadi (Kitchener, ON/Eastwood Collegiate) with a game high 15, while
Stefan Djukic (Kitchener, ON/) and
Jackson Kelly (Brampton, ON) both chipped in 9. The Warriors will host the York Lions for their Senior Night on Wednesday February 15, 2023 before wrapping up their regular season play on Friday when they travel to Hamilton, Ontario to take on the McMaster Marauders.
