Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Warriors sweep Algoma in weekend set at the PAC

The Waterloo Warriors men's basketball team came away with two victories this past weekend against the visiting Algoma Thunderbirds. The two victories tied in with a historic Raising of The Eagle Feather ceremony as well as Think Pink events made for a great weekend at the Physical Activity Complex.

On Friday in game one, the Warriors and Thunderbirds had a high scoring back and forth first half that saw the visitors take a 2 point first quarter lead into a 6 point halftime lead by a score of 46-40. The black and gold however upped their second half defence holding Algoma to just 28 total points in the second half which allowed them to pull away late in the fourth quarter to take game one by a final score of 80-74. The Warriors had five players score in double figures on Friday night with Stefan Djukic (Kitchener, ON/) leading the charge with 14 points and 11 rebounds, while Ethan Andrew (Brantford, ON/North Park), Raf Llorin (Cambridge, ON/), Kanayo Nnadi (Kitchener, ON/Eastwood Collegiate), and Andrew Cook (Sarnia, ON/) all added 10 a piece.

In the second night of the back to back, the Warriors built off of their energy from the previous night and jumped out to a 22-6 lead after the first quarter. The Warriors would continue their excellent offensive play in the second frame, building on their lead as they entered the half leading 49-26. The Thunderbirds would chip away for much of the second hald, getting the Warrior lead doen to as little as 14 points, however that would be as close as they would get as the Warriors wrapped up the season sweep in a big fashion taking game two by a final score of 86-64. Cristian Craciun (Ancaster, ON/) and Stefan Djukic (Kitchener, ON/) led the way for the black and gold scoring 15 points each while Raf Llorin (Cambridge, ON/) added 14 points.

The Warriors will now prepare for the battle of Waterloo this week as they take on the Laurier Golden Hawks in a home and home series. Game one will take place Wednesday February 1st at 8:00pm at the PAC while game two will be at Laurier on Saturday February 4th at 3:00pm.
