Waterloo, ON - The Waterloo Warriors men's golf team achieved a remarkable feat on Sunday afternoon by clinching the team and individual titles at the 2023 OUA Championship.
Graem Costigan (Cambridge/), Jack Deighan (Cambridge/), Jacob Foxworthy (Waterloo/), and Noah Lebrasseur showed great resilience despite the cold and wet weather at Grey Silo Golf Club in Waterloo. Their spirits remained high as they combined to post a dominant score that was 13-strokes better than second-place finishers Western.
Zach Burt (Fergus), who shot -3, 68 after recording five birdies during his second round, hoisted the Len Shore Trophy as the conference's individual men's champion.Â
On day one, the Warriors' men's team was, very impressively, the lone group to finish in the red by shooting a combined score of -1, 283. Looking to reclaim an OUA title for the first time since their three-peat between 2014 and 2016, the Warriors were buoyed by three of their five student-athletes finishing with top-10 scores. Jack Deighan (Cambridge/) recorded four birdies on the day along with an eagle on the par-5 fifth hole to finish at -4, 67 to take ownership of the men's individual leaderboard. Nipping at his heels though are Steve Hill of the Windsor Lancers and Kobe Smith of the Guelph Gryphons, both of whom shot a -2, 69. Four other golfers, including Deighan's teammates William Dodd and Graem Costigan (Cambridge/), rounded out the negative scores with identical 1-unders.
On the women's side, the Warriors team of Yoshida, Barker, Purdie and Jamal gained enough ground on day two to finish in 5th place.
The team now looks ahead to the 2024 Canadian University Golf Championships slated for BC in June.
