The Waterloo Warriors lost their third game in a row at the Naismith Classic, dropping a 69-60 decision to Ryerson in the closing game of the tournament.
Waterloo's Cam McIntyre (Kitchener/Kitchener C.I.) put Waterloo on the score sheet with an opening three point shot. He suffered a shoulder injury on the next play, and after just 1:21 of play was done for the afternoon. Waterloo led 12-2 after five minutes of play and then watched as Ryerson scored the next
16 points towards a 18-12 Ryerson lead after the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Ryerson extended the lead to 10 points on three separate occasions. But each time Waterloo would narrow the gap a bit to keep from falling behind too far. In the first half Waterloo never went to the free throw line, while watching in the lanes as Ryerson went 8 for 8 from the charity stripe.
In the second half Waterloo narrowed the gap once as low as 4 points, but also were behind by 17 at one point. Despite an 11-5 run by Waterloo to close out the game, Ryerson had a comfortable victory. Waterloo had slightly better field goal percentage than Ryerson, but were beat on the boards by a 31-17 edge and on the free throw line by a 14-5 difference.
For Waterloo, Tim Rossy (Winnipeg/Silver Heights) was the only player in double figures with 10 points. Ryerson was led by their guard tandem of Ola Adegboruwa and Jahmal Jones with 15 points each.
In the noon game Laval finished a convincing weekend with a 100-70 win over Memorial.
In the opening period the teams traded threes to open the game before Laval opened a 9 point lead. Memorial chipped away as the period wound down. Jason Shepherd had 12 points for Memorial in the opening period as Laval was up by a single point at 20-19.
After being silent in the first quarter Jean-Francois Beaulieu Maheux opened the second with five points to open another lead for Laval. At the half, Laval led by 9, hitting nine of their 14 field goals from three point range.
In the second half Laval's rebounding edge was leading to more shots and a widening lead. Early in the 4th any thought of a Memorial comeback was put away when Jean-Philippe Renaud found a spot in the corner and hit 3 successive threes. Laval led by 20 at that point, en route to a comfortable win.
Robbie Habib with 21 points and Jason Shepherd with 17 points and 10 rebounds led Memorial. Laval had six players in double figures, led by
22 points and 13 rebounds from Jerome Turcotte-Routhier and 19 points from Xavier Baribeau.
In women's play McGill defeated Alberta 74-58 and Laurier defeated the host Warriors 72-34.
On the men's side of the tournament, Laval was tournament champions with a 3-0 record. Ryerson finished 2-1, Memorial 1-2, and the host Waterloo Warriors 0-3. Jean-Francois Beaulieu Maheux of Laval was tournament MVP, with teammate Jerome Turcotte-Routhier joining him on the all-star team. Other all-stars were Jason Shepherd of Memorial, Ola Adegboruwa of Ryerson and Alan Goodhoofd (Oakville/Kings Christian) of Waterloo.
On the women's side of the tournament, McGill was tournament champions with a 3-0 record. Laurier finished 2-1, Alberta 1-2, and the host Waterloo Warriors 0-3. Natalie Larocque of McGill was tournament MVP, with teammate Marie-Eve Martin joining her on the all-star team. Other all-stars were Anneka Bakker of Alberta and Megan Grant and Renata Adamczyk of Laurier.
