The Toronto Varsity Blues and Waterloo Warriors will battle it out for the OUA title tomorrow after securing convincing victories on Day 1 of OUA Championship competition at Bernie Arbour Stadium in Hamilton on Friday.
Having never won an OUA Baseball Championship title before, the Waterloo Warriors secured an 8-3 victory over the Carleton Ravens. Although the Ravens scored the first run in the opening inning, thanks to a wild pitch by the Warriors, Waterloo responded in the second inning with runs from
Jayden Kemp (Nassau, Bahamas/) and
Alessandro Strazzeri (Toronto/), courtesy of a Sam Shepherd single.
In the fourth inning, the Warriors managed to score five runs consecutively over five straight at-bats. The scoring spree began with two scores on back-to-back bases-loaded walks, followed by a sacrifice fly from
Sean Skorupski (Mississauga/), which brought
Adam Leatherland (Simcoe/) home for the score. Next,
Jayden Kemp (Nassau, Bahamas/) grounded into a fielder's choice to secure
Evan Morrison (Mitchell/) the score. The final run of the inning was scored by
Nolan Misa (Markham/) on a Strazzaeri single.
In the sixth inning, Waterloo managed to add one more run to their tally, making the score 8-1. Although Carleton scored two runs in the same inning, they couldn't narrow the lead, and this win secured the Warriors' spot in the gold medal game.
Jacob Ray (Tecumseh/), who led the team, had an outstanding performance with ten strikeouts and a batting average against of .105 in this victory.
The gold medal match between Toronto Varsity Blues and Waterloo Warriors will commence at 1:30 PM with the first pitch.
