Warriors top Lancers in OT thriller

Box Score

The Waterloo Warriors women's basketball team is getting used to playing tight games down the stretch. They're getting used to winning them, too.

For the second time in two nights, the Warriors came out victorious in a nailbiter, as they claimed a 70-64 overtime win over the Windsor Lancers in their home opener at the Physical Activities Complex on Saturday evening.

Kaitlyn Overeem (Brantford, ON/) had a monster double-double, registering game-highs in points with 22, and rebounds with 12. Summer Pahl (Kitchener, ON/) contributed 17 points on 6-of-8 from the field, while Vanessa Hughes (Hamilton, ON/) added 16 points. The win elevates the Warriors to 3-0 on the young season, as they continue to announce their arrival as contenders in the OUA.

Julia Chairot led a balanced attack from the Lancers with 14 points, including 2-for-2 from three-point range.

The game followed a similar script as Waterloo's win a night earlier against TMU. On offense, they were aggressive in getting to the rim, making 19 of 23 free throws. Meanwhile, on the defensive end, the Waterloo pressure forced 25 turnovers (including 15 steals) to make life miserable for the Lancers.

The Warriors led early and often, as they jumped to a 22-15 first-quarter advantage. Despite some pushback from the Lancers, the Warriors would hold on to the lead until Windsor was able to edge in front 55-53 with just 61 seconds left in regulation.

Beth Howlett (Burlington, ON/) hit a big jumper on the next possession to knot the game back up, only to have Chairot respond with a bucket for the Lancers. But, the rim-running identity paid off once again for the Warriors, as Hughes drew a foul on her way into the lane and nailed both free throws to send the game to overtime tied at 57-57.

With the game knotted again at 62-62 in the extra session, the Warriors erupted – Overeem hit shots on back-to-back possessions, and Howlett drilled a three to give Waterloo a 69-64 lead with just 30 seconds left. The defense held the rest of the way, and the Warriors claimed their first victory of the season on Carl Totzke Court.

The Warriors will look to continue their hot start when they visit the Brock Badgers next Friday November 18 at 6pm.
