Warriors Split Weekend Road Trip: Defeat Lancers, Fall to Mustangs

On their first weekend back, the Warriors headed on a road trip to Southwestern Ontario. After defeating the Windsor Lancers with a score of 62-41, they couldn't maintain the winning streak and lost to the Mustangs the following night with a score of 64-70.

Friday

The Warriors kicked off their 2024 season with a game against the Windsor Lancers at the Toldo Lancer Centre. Waterloo had a strong start, taking an eight-point lead in the first quarter and scoring 12 second-chance points. They maintained their lead in the second quarter, ending the first half with a score of 29-21. In the second half, Ghiselle Poblete (Brampton/) scored 13 out of her 15 points, helping the Warriors to outscore the Lancers 62-41 and maintain their lead throughout the game.

Nehita Oko Obo (Ottawa, ON/)h was an absolute force on the court, grabbing 14 rebounds and contributing 2 blocks, 7 points, and 3 assists to the game. Meanwhile, Ghiselle Poblete (Brampton/) also had a great performance for the black and gold team, scoring 15 points and making 4 steals to add to her impressive record.

The Warriors outperformed the Lancers on the free throw line, shooting 68.8 % compared to the Lancers' 58.3 %. The bench contributed 28 of the Warrior's 64 points.

Saturday

During the game's opening minutes, both teams struggled to score and kept each other at bay, with neither team reaching the 5-point mark. The Warriors were unable to convert on their shot attempts, which put them down by four points at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Warriors failed to gain momentum against the Mustangs and were outscored 8-19.

Coming out of the break, the Warriors could drive more, resulting in them being sent to the line. They made 6 out of 13 foul shots. However, due to the Mustangs' strong defense and pressure, the Warriors did not have many three-pointer opportunities. Western made a buzzer-beater at the end of the quarter, and the Mustangs were leading 53-37.

Both teams showed great energy at the beginning of the last quarter, and the Warriors seemed determined to make a comeback. With only a few minutes left, the Warriors narrowed the score to single digits, putting pressure on the Mustangs. They fought relentlessly until the very end, but Western managed to hold onto their lead and win the game 70-64 despite their efforts.

On Saturday night, three players of the Warriors team scored points in double digits. Ghiselle Poblete (Brampton/), Summer Pahl (Kitchener/) and Yemi Oladipo (St. Catharines/) contributed 15, 13, and 11 points, respectively. Nehita Oko Obo (Ottawa, ON/)h continued to own the boards with ten rebounds; Oko Oboh currently sits in second place for the Warriors' all-time single-season record for the highest rebounds per game.
