Vanessa Hughes (Hamilton, ON/) is a name you heard a lot over the past season and for good reason. Hughes was all over the stats sheet for the Warriors women's basketball team putting on a show game after game. And for the second straight season, Hughes is an all-star, this time a second-team all-star following her final and best season with the black and gold.
Not only was Hughes a major reason for the most successful regular season in program history, she played a major part in Waterloo's OUA quarter-final victory over the No. 8 Ottawa Gee-Gees which clinched the first OUA semifinal spot for Waterloo since 1986. Hughes put up a game high 27 points in that victory which included 5 made three-pointers. She also added eight rebounds and four steals.
Hughes finished the regular season with the sixth most points (373) and seventh in points per game (17). She as third in 3-pointers made (62) and fifth in 3-point percentage (38.5%). Hughes finishes her Warrior career first in all-time 3-pointers made (152), first in all-time steals (124), and second in all-time points scored (903).
"Hughes is one of the all-time greatest women's basketball players to have ever played for Waterloo and it's been an honour to be her coach," said head coach
Jessica Roque. "She puts in so much work and effort in practice and it all came together for her this season. I am so happy she has been honoured by the OUA and wish her nothing but the best in whatever is next for this rock star."
