Warriors drop first of two to Thunderbirds

Box Score The Waterloo women's basketball team put together a disappointing effort in their first of two games against the Algoma Thunderbirds up in Sault Ste. Marie.  Waterloo fell by a score of 77-61

Algoma went on an early 8-point run forcing a Waterloo Warrior timeout in the contest. Waterloo chipped into the deficit but Algoma continued to pull ahead. Waterloo turned up the pressure in the second quarter but Algoma continued to generate points off of fast breaks and turnovers.  The Thunderbirds would have an 18 point cushion at half.

In the second, Waterloo regrouped, playing better defense, forcing Algoma to run out the shot clock on several occasions. Waterloo applied full court pressure trying to stop the Thunderbirds from further pulling ahead, but Algoma continued their hot hand from beyond the arc. Waterloo crawled their way back down the stretch, going on a 10-point run, cutting the deficit down to just 10 points going into the final quarter but that is as close as Waterloo would come.

Kristen Osborne (Markham) was huge for the Warriors with 26 points going 10-for-25 from the field with three 3-pointers and three more from the line.  Nicole Schlick (Prince George) was also on her game with 13 points in the loss.

The win was the first of the season for Algoma (1-12) while Waterloo dropped to 2-12 on the season.

The Warriors will look to rebound tomorrow night in their rematch with the Thunderbirds with tipoff set for 6pm.
