Warriors drop season finale, school day game to Hawks

The Warriors put together three strong quarters of basketball in the Battle of Waterloo School Day Game at Laurier.  Unfortunately for the black and gold, their second quarter collapse where they were outscored 28-7, cost them the game in a 72-53 loss.

Waterloo stuck with the stingy Hawks in the opening 10 minutes but it all came apart in the second as the Hawks had too many easy looks at the hoop.  The result was a 48-20 lead for the home side at half.

The Warriors came out a new team in the second half and went on a 13-0 run to pull within 15 of the home side but the Hawks answered back with the next 12 points taking away any chance of a comeback from Waterloo.

The Warriors shot 28.6% from the field compared to 43.5% for the Golden Hawks and could only muster 37 rebounds while Laurier had 53.  The Hawks also received 23 points from their bench while Waterloo's bench could only provide nine.

Leading the way for Waterloo was third year guard Emily Wilk (Oakville) who put up 19 points going 8-for-16 from the field with three from downtown.  It was clear Wilk wasn't going down without a fight in this contest fighting for loose balls and battling every step of the way, coming away with a team high 10 rebounds.  Also chipping in on the offence was Nicole Schlick (Prince George) and Kristen Osborne (Markham) who had 10 points each.

For the Hawks it was complete team effort that propelled them to the victory.  Courtney Bruce had 15 while Nicole Morrison and Sarah Dillon posted 12 and 11 points respectively.  On the boards Heather Payne was too much for the Warriors collecting 14 rebounds, 12 of them coming on the defensive side.

The Warriors finish the season with a 4-16 record and hope for a healthy return of some key players and a solid recruiting class to turn it around next season.
