Warriors fall to Mustangs on buzzer-beater in final contest of 2015

Marti Killeen had 14 points and 16 rebounds in her final game with the Warriors
Box Score Story by: Martin Timmerman

The Warriors were hoping to make it into the OUA playoffs with a big win on the final game of the season.  Despite a big comeback effort in the second half the Warriors missed the playoffs with a 75-72 loss to their OUA west rivals Western.  Ina confusing finish to the game it was a Mackenzie Puklicz three-pointer at the buzzer that gave Western the win.

The confusing finish was setup by the awareness that Waterloo needed to win by more than 10 points to finish ahead of Western in the standings. With 1:07 remaining Waterloo was up by only 4 points and needed the ball for more scoring. Despite having the lead Waterloo fouled Western to attempt more scoring. The tables turned instead and Western tied the game at 72-72. Western again had the ball with four seconds remaining and inbounded to Puklicz for the finish.

With a good Saturday afternoon crowd on hand for Fantastic Alumni, Faculty and Staff Day the Warriors came out cold in the first quarter, while Western found their way to an early 10-2 lead. The second quarter was more of the same, with Western shooting very well at 52% and Waterloo only able to hit 31%. The half time score was 42-29 in favour of Western.

Western achieved their largest margin of 17 points before Waterloo started their comeback with 15 minutes remaining. Emily Wilk (Oakville), Marti Killeen (Oakville) and Amy Jarvis (Burlington) started the run, getting the lead down to single digits at the three quarter mark. In the fourth Madison Behr (Ancaster) and Laura Burnett (Heidelberg) added to the scoring as the Warriors tied it at 61-61 on two free throws by Behr with 4:07 remaining. After another Western lead, Waterloo came back and took the lead for the first time in the game. Once with the lead they could not make it wide enough, setting up the confusing finish.

Four Warriors ended in double figures with Emily Wilk (Oakville) leading with 16 points. Killeen had 14 points and 16 rebounds, while Jarvis with 14 and Behr with 13 rounded out the top scorers.

Mackenzie Puklicz led the Mustangs with 24 points on the day, including five from long range. Caroline Wolynski added 20 points for Western.

The final home game also marked Seniors Day as four Warriors ended their careers. Madison Behr (Ancaster), Laura Burnett (Heidelberg), Marti Killeen (Oakville) and Mackenzie Lougheed (Owen Sound) were honoured after the game for their contributions to Warrior basketball.  Head coach Tyler Slipp delivered a heart-warming speech to the four graduating seniors who have shown a tremendous amount of commitment and dedication to the Warriors the past five years.

The Warriors ended the OUA season with a 5-15 record and fourth place in the newly aligned OUA West.
