Warriors dropped by 'Stangs in season opener

Box Score It wasn't the season opening game Tyler Slipp and his Warriors had imagined in a tough 86-53 loss to Western on Wednesday night in London.

Western got out to an 11-0 lead and the Warriors simply could not recover.  The silver lining in it all was the finish by Waterloo, sticking with the hot shooting Western team in the final quarter as the Mustangs outscored the Warriors by just one, 18-17.

Western shot 45.1% from the field compared to 30.9% for the Warriors while the home side also outrebounded Waterloo 42-28.  The Warriors did however do a good job of getting to the line, as they did so 19 times, successful on 14 of those attempts.

Kristen Osborne (Markham) was the top scorer for the Warriors with 19 points in her 27 minutes of action off the bench.  Osborne went 9-for-19 from the field with four of those coming from beyond the arc.  She also made four of six free throw attempts.

Jacqui Rodrigues (Waterloo) was another bright spot in the loss with 13 points in the game while Emily Wilk (Oakville) had nine.  Wilk led all Warrior players with 10 rebounds in the contest.

For Western, it was a trio of starters who did most of the damage with Julia Curran leading the way posting 18 points which include six from 3-point land.  Mackenzie Puklicz had 17 points while Maddy Horst rounded out the Western attack with 15.

Waterloo will now prepare for their home opener on Saturday at 1pm as they welcome the No. 9 Windsor Lancers to the PAC.
