Warriors put together gutsy effort in loss to No. 5 Hawks

Box Score The Warriors continued to play solid basketball against nationally ranked teams on Wednesday night giving the No. 5 Laurier Golden Hawks a tough test in a 60-47 loss. Earlier in the month Waterloo gave No. 1 Windsor a tough battle as the black and gold continue to make positive strides in OUA play.

"It was a gutsy effort by the girls tonight. We stuck to the game plan and played a hard, dedicated game from start to finish," mentioned head coach Tyler Slipp. "We had a lot of solid ball movement in the second half but couldn't secure a few defensive rebounds which forced us to foul as time ran out."

With the win, Laurier improved to 12-1 on the season and have won 12 straight while Waterloo fell to 3-11.

The Warriors played sound defence in the contest with 27 defensive boards led by Marti Killeen (Oakville) who corralled an impressive 10 defensive rebounds. She also added three on the offensive side for 13 overall. As a team Waterloo also collected six steals in the game.

Offensively it was a team effort with Amy Jarvis (Burlington) leading the charge going 6-for-11 from the field while adding one from the charity stripe for 13 points. Laura Burnett (Heidelberg) posted nine points while Killeen and Emily Wilk (Oakville) chipped in with eight and six respectively.

The Hawks were led by Kaitlyn Schenck who posted a game high 15 points while Nicole Morrison was also in double digits with 14.

Waterloo will continue their six game road trip on Friday with their longest journey of the season to Thunder Bay to battle the No.9 Lakehead Thunderwolves. Tipoff is set for 6pm and the game can be seen live on oua.tv.
