The Waterloo Warriors travelled to Toronto to take on the OUA East York Lions and came home with their first win of the league season 53-37. It was defensive pressure and a rebounding edge that made the difference for Waterloo as they now move to 1-2 on the season. Marti Killeen (Oakville) led the Warriors with a double-double (12 points, 12 rebounds).
 
Waterloo had a 5-0 lead after the first minutes of play, but only scored another five the rest of the first quarter as York took the opening period 12-10.
 
Neither team was able to establish much offensive consistency in the early going of the second quarter, until the teams traded threes to get things started around the 4 minute mark. Then in a period of less than three minutes, Waterloo went on a 13-0 run to take the lead en route to a 26-20 half time lead. Emily Wilk (Oakville) hit for five points to cap that run.
 
The teams played an even third quarter with Waterloo edging the gap to over 10 points on multiple occasions, only to have York close the gap again. As the third quarter expired, Waterloo lead was up to eight at 40-32.
 
After trading a few baskets to start the fourth quarter, the Warriors held York scoreless over the last 6:44 of the game to come out with a comfortable 53-37 victory.
 
Waterloo held a big rebounding edge at 44-30 and often took shots in the paint, leading to 35% field goal shooting. Waterloo got all 12 players into the game with a majority of the roster playing over ten minutes.
 
Marti Killeen (Oakville) led the Warriors with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Emily Wilk (Oakville) chipped in with 12 points while rookie Amy Jarvis (Burlington) added 10. For York, Emma Thompson was the highest producer with 9 points.
 
The win gives Waterloo a 1-2 record early in the OUA season. Next game for the Warriors is Friday night as they travel to Kingston to visit the Queen's Gaels.
