Gryphons down Warriors in final game of season

Jacqui Rodrigues capped off a strong rookie campaign with 15 points in Guelph
Box Score The Waterloo women's basketball team finished off their season with a 71-55 loss to the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday afternoon at the W.F. Mitchell Centre in Guelph.

The Gryphons finish the season with a 7-14 regular season record, good for sixth in the OUA and earn a spot in the playoffs.  Waterloo failed to win a game in 2012-13 ending the season with an 0-21 record.

Alexandra Beatty (Woodstock, ON) led the team with 13 fourth-quarter points to bring her total to 19 on the day to boost the Gryphons to victory.  Jasmine Douglas (Guelph, ON) added 13 rebounds and six points in her final regular season game as a Gryphon.

Waterloo was headed by Jacqui Rodrigues (Waterloo/) with 15 points and Sam McIntyre (Waterloo/) (Waterloo, ON) with 10.

To start the day, the Gryphons took an early 6-0 lead. But after sparking the lead, a couple Gryphon mishaps allowed the Warriors to tie the game up at six in an otherwise Gryphon dominated quarter. The Gryphons continued to stand tall in their own key to shut down the Warrior attack to stay ahead 16-13 at the end of one.

The second quarter took a strong defensive turn with neither team adding to the score for the first two minutes. From there, control of the court was swapped until Laura Bossers (Stratford/) (Stratford, ON) stepped up for three to bring the game to 20. After dropping a 6-point lead, the Gryphons picked up their play to move the ball fluidly throughout the Gryphon zone to stay ahead to end the half at 30-29.

The Gryphons were slow to find their rhythm in the third, but with a deep strike from the arc, Dana Van Balkom (Hamilton, ON) kick-started the offence to regain a tentative lead. But, despite the fresh signs of life in the Gryphon offence, the third unfolded as another largely defensive affair with the Warriors edging ahead 39-37.  After a brief loss in control, the Gryphons regrouped under consecutive baskets from Douglas to open a 9-point streak to regain a 52-44 lead.

This last-minute boost was carried into the final frame as they extended their lead into the double-digits for the first time of the day.  At this point, Alex Beatty began to heat up after nailing all three of her attacks from the arc to push the game out of reach to end the day with a 71-55 Gryphon victory.
