Lougheed sinks Lions with late jumper

Box Score

Mackenzie Lougheed (Owen Sound) called her own number and put down a jump shot with 18 seconds remaining to give the Warriors a 50-49 win over the visiting York Lions on a rare Thursday night game at the PAC.  Lougheed finished with a game high 13 points going 6-for-15 from the field to improve Waterloo's record to 2-2 on the season.

The Lions had an opportunity to even the game after inbounding the ball with 0.3 seconds left as Ishanaa Seupersadsingh would be sent to the line after a Warrior foul but could only make one of two shots handing Waterloo the victory.  With the loss York fell to 1-4 on the season.

Both teams will want to erase the lowly field goal percentages from their memory as York went 26.8% from the field compared to Waterloo's 30%.  The difference for the home side was their strong rebounding as the black and gold collected 44 rebounds (11 offensive, 33 defensive) while York gathered in 33.

The turning point for the Warriors was an 8-0 run early in the fourth quarter with first year guard Elizabeth Holmes (Welland/) knocking down two straight three ball's while Marti Killeen (Oakville/) hit one of her two field goals.  That 8-0 run put the Warriors up 42-37 and they were able to hold off the Lions the rest of the contest.

Holmes had nine points in the win, going a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc while Killeen posted seven.

For the Lions Courtney Osborne and Nadia Qahwash each had ten points in the loss.

Waterloo will be back in action on Saturday as part of their think pink game against the Queen's Gaels.  Tip-off is set for 6pm at the PAC.
