Hawks use strong second quarter to fly past Warriors

Box Score
The Waterloo women's basketball team dropped to 0-12 on the season following an 88-60 loss to the Laurier Golden Hawks in the first battle of Waterloo this season on Wednesday night at the PAC.  The win evens Laurier's record at 6-6 on the season.

Laurier took advantage of some hot shooting in the second quarter to outscore the Warriors 25-5 and did not look back en route to their sixth win of the season.   Waterloo was 39.7% from the field compared to Laurier's 37.8% but the difference in the match was Laurier's 25 free-throws made while Waterloo was only good on 11 from the charity stripe.

Waterloo got the quick start they were looking for, draining their first two shots of the game to take a 4-0.  The lead was short lived however as Laurier would score the next seven points as the visiting Hawks began to find their shooting stride.  The see-saw opening quarter would end with the two combatants even at 13 apiece.

The Warriors would fall into a lull in the second as Laurier took advantage with Laura Doyle (Guelph) and Whitney Ellenor (Pickering) leading the charge to outscore Waterloo 25-5.  Turnovers and cold shooting would turn out to hurt the Warriors with Laurier heading into the break up by 20, 38-18.

Waterloo would stick with the Hawks the rest of the way but could not battle back from their sluggish second quarter to remain winless on the season.
Ellenor, a third year centre led all players with 22 points going 8-for-10 from the field while Alena Luciani (Oakville) had 15 points for the Hawks.  Doyle rounded out the Laurier attack with 10 points.

Sam McIntrye had another strong game for the Warriors with 13 points and eight rebounds while Erika Persson (Lund/) tallied 12 of her own.  Rookie guard Jacqui Rodrigues (Waterloo/) had eight points while Madison Behr (Ancaster/Dundas Dynamo) completed the Warrior attack with seven.

Waterloo will be back to the PAC on Saturday at noon for a match up with the McMaster Marauders.  The game can be seen live on SSN Canada.
