The Waterloo women's basketball team got off to the start they were looking for but quickly fell apart in Sunday's 92-70 loss to the Queen's Gaels, in what was their season opening game.
The first quarter saw the Gaels fall behind early, after a Warriors 6-0 run. Queen's battled back with some crucial boards and easy put-back baskets from Pearson. A timely three by Boag with 4:17 left brought the Gaels to within one. A Gaels three-point play by
Hanna Koposhynska (Mississauga gave the Tricolour a 14-11 lead after a 14-5 run. A steal and drive to the hoop by rookie guard
Emily Hazlett (Fredricton) helped the Gaels build on their lead and shift the momentum, giving them a 25-11 lead after the first.
The Gaels continued to take command of the game in the second quarter, kicking things off with a
Gemma Bullard (Guelph) three-pointer. A Boag three-point play, followed by a Wright three-pointer, another Boag jumper and a buzzer-beating three pointer combined to give Queen's a 45-31 lead at halftime.
The second half featured more Gaels offensive control, with the third quarter being kicked off by a Kernahan three-point play. Queen's outscored Waterloo 47-39 in the second half. The Gaels were very efficient from the field, shooting 52% opposed to Waterloo's 42%. Queen's was 39% from outside the arc, while Waterloo shot 21%.
Kate Kuntze (Stratford/) had herself a game for the Warriors tallying a game high 22 points. The third year guard was 8-for-12 from the field while knocking down six free throws.
Marti Killeen (Oakville/) was also a factor for the black and gold with 14 points while adding five rebounds and two steals.
Rookie guard
Jacqui Rodrigues (Waterloo/) had an impressive debut for the black and gold with 11 points and five defensive rebounds.
The Warriors return home next weekend for a pair of matches with the Ryerson Rams (Friday) and Toronto Varsity Blues (Saturday). Both games tip off at 6pm and can be seen live on SSN Canada.
