Mustangs lead from start to finish, cruise past Warriors

The Waterloo women's basketball team were handed an 85-42 loss by the Western Mustangs on Wednesday night in London.   The Mustangs controlled the play from start to finish  to run away with the easy victory.

The Western women held leads of 11 after one quarter and 17 after two before exploding for 30 points in the third period to take a lopsided 62-25 lead into the fourth quarter.

With the win, the Mustangs improved to 7-8 on the season, putting them in a tie for fifth place currently in the OUA West division. The Warriors, meanwhile, fell to 1-14.

Jenny Vaughan was Western's top scorer Wednesday night, tallying 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting. The third-year guard added five rebounds, five assists and a pair of steals in a team-high 27 minutes. Caroline Wolynski went 6-for-11 from the floor for 15 points, and also added a game-high seven steals. Katelyn Leddy was a force on the boards, grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds.

Laura Bossers (Stratford/) had 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting for the Warriors. Marti Killeen (Oakville/) also finished with 10 points, but she was held to just 2-of-12 shooting. As a team, the Warriors struggled mightily from the floor, finishing at 20.9% (14-for-67) overall.

The Western women shot a combined 49.3% (34-for-69) Wednesday night, and posted an 81.3% mark (13-for-16) from the free throw line. The Mustangs controlled the boards on the evening, out rebounding the Warriors by a 54-37 margin.

Waterloo returns to the PAC on Saturday to face the McMaster Marauders at 1pm.
