Women's basketball drop pair of road games to Carleton and Ottawa

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
Friday, Dec. 2 @ Carleton
Carleton 69, Waterloo 51

The Waterloo women's basketball team showed their compete level against the second ranked team in the country, Carleton Ravens fall by a score of 69-51 on Friday night at the Ravens' Nest.

Carleton owned the first quarter, outscoring Waterloo 21-12. The Warriors looked sluggish as they struggled making an impact against the defensively focused Ravens team.

But after enjoying a dominant spell in the opening quarter, the second was a harsh slice of reality as the Warriors found their feet in front of a boisterous crowd at the Ravens' Nest.

Carleton struggled to find the net as Waterloo limited the Ravens to only eight points in the quarter. While Carleton struggled, Waterloo capitalized on defensive mistakes to end the half only five points behind, trailing 29-24.

But Carleton came out of halftime looking like the team that dominated the play in the first quarter.

Krista Van Slingerland (Waterloo, Ont.) and Kendall MacLeod (Brockville, Ont.) sunk shots from outside the paint to help the Ravens re-establish a firm lead in the game.

The Warriors looked to contain the Ravens in their own end only to have Alyson Bush (Ottawa) seize on defensive rebounds and lead charges up the court to disrupt their pressure.

Waterloo's defence seemed to panic at the Ravens' pressure, allowing Carleton to go from no chances at the line to a surprising 12 chances in the third quarter alone.

The Ravens refused to turn off the offensive pressure in the fourth quarter, once again sinking 20 points. Despite a mid-quarter surge from Waterloo, Carleton was able to ride out the pressure and seal the win, improving its record to 5-2.

MacLeod tied for a game-high 15 points with Warrior Marti Killeen (Oakville/) (Oakville, Ont.) as Carleton dominated on the boards, grabbing 51 rebounds to Waterloo's 27.  Killeen was 6-for-12 from the field while adding two three pointers and a free throw to round out her scoring.

Waterloo wrap up their 2011 calendar year on Saturday when they face the Ottawa Gee-Gees who are coming off a 65-53 win over the Laurier Golden Hawks.

Saturday, Dec. 3 @ Ottawa
Ottawa 83, Waterloo 37

The Waterloo women's basketball team dropped their seventh game of the season falling to the Ottawa Gee-Gees 83-37 on Saturday evening.  A slow start once again was the downfall of the black and gold as they found themselves down 54-17 at half.

The Gee-Gees buried 20 points in the first quarter before Waterloo even managed to get their first point on the scoreboard, thanks to a free throw in the final two minutes of the first quarter. The Gee-Gees went on another 14 point run to open the second, holding the Warriors scoreless for another five minutes.

Rookies paced the Gee-Gees for large periods of the game; in addition to starting point guard Kellie Ring (Ottawa, Ont.), first-years Elissa de Wit (Cornwall, Ont.), Ashley Hoover (Amherstburg, Ont.), Maddie Stephen (Toronto, Ont.) and Ariane Lachance-Scantland (Gatineau, Qué.) all saw significant playing time.

Fifth-year centre Hannah Sunley-Paisley (Toronto, Ont.) paced the Gee-Gees once again with 21 points, with fourth-year centre Jenna Gilbert (Ottawa, Ont.) also adding 12 points. Hoover led the rookies with her nine points. Fifth-year Bess Lennox (Ottawa, Ont.) continued to dominate the boards with her 12 rebounds and eight points. As a team, the Gee-Gees had 18 steals on the night.

The 1-7 Warriors now have a month off to regroup and bounce back with a new game plan in 2012 before taking on the Laurier Golden Hawks on Wednesday, January 4 in their first game of the new year.
