The Warriors got off to another slow start falling behind 23-8 after one quarter and could not rebound as the York Lions led from start to finish, en route to a 63-49 win on Friday night at the PAC gym.
Brittany Szockyj (Niagara on the Lake, Ont.) of the Lions led all players with 20 points while her team shot a perfect 11-for-11 from the line. York shot 40.4 percent from the field as a team while the Warriors shot 43.8 percent but were cold from beyond the arc with a lowly 20 shooting percentage.
The win was York's first since opening night when York beat Western 76-66 and improved their record to 2-3. Waterloo fell to 1-4 with the loss.
York outscored the Warriors 34-23 in the first half thanks to strong rebounding by Szockyj who collected eight rebounds. Also chipping in on the boards was Courtney Osborne (Markham, Ont.) with five while adding 10 points in the game. Rounding out the York attack was Samantha Ernest (Oakville, Ont.) with 11 points.
Waterloo bounced back with a strong third quarter as
Laura Burnett (Heidelberg/) and
Sam McIntyre (Waterloo/) began to heat up from the outside. Burnett led her team with 13 points, going 6-for-10 from the field and knocking down 1-of-3 from the outside. McIntyre shot lights out on the evening going a perfect 4-for-4 from the field while adding the four more at the charity stripe in four attempts. Contributing up front was
Marti Killeen (Oakville/) who had eight points in the loss.
Down 45-37 after the third quarter, Waterloo looked to have the momentum but York continued their pressure in the paint and ran away with the game outscoring the Warriors 18-12 in the fourth quarter to take the 63-49 victory.
Waterloo look to bounce back tomorrow evening as they face the Laurentian Voyageurs. The game can be seen live on the Streaming Sports Network (SSN Canada) with tip-off set for 6pm.
