Women's basketball fall to Toronto; come up short against Ryerson

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Friday, Nov. 11 @ Toronto
Toronto 84, Waterloo 40

The Waterloo Warriors opened up their season on the wrong foot falling to the No. 10 Toronto Varsity Blues by a lopsided score of 84-40 on Friday night at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym in Toronto.

Fifth-year guard Joanna Medri led all players with 15 points on the night.  The Toronto native opened both the first and second half with a three-pointer and added five steals en route to player of the game honours.

Third-year forward Alicia Van Kampen of Orangeville, Ont., had a double-double of 13 points and 11 boards, while sophomore forward Julie Longauer (Whitby, Ont.) also recorded 13 points in the win.

The Blues opened the game on a 12-2 run and went onto build a commanding 28-9 lead after the first 10 minutes of action.

Toronto continued to dominate with an 8-0 streak in the first two minutes of the second quarter. Waterloo slightly closed the gap as rookie guard Erin Roberts (Kitchener, Ont.) led the charge with five late points. U of T held a 45-27 advantage at halftime.

The Blue and White held the visiting Warriors to single digits in each of the third and fourth quarters to round out their first win of the season.

The Warriors return to action tomorrow evening against Ryerson with tip-off set for 6pm.

Saturday, Nov. 12 @ Ryerson
Ryerson 72, Waterloo 65

The Waterloo women's basketball team scored 23 fourth quarter points in a comeback effort but fell just short losing their second game of the season 72-65 to the Ryerson Rams on Saturday night.

The opening minutes of the contest were foul-filled, as the Rams found themselves in the penalty, taking five fouls before the four-minute mark of the quarter.

The Rams doubled Waterloo's score, going up 20-9 seven minutes in. However, the Warriors quickly cut that lead to six after a turnover and some missed assignments allowed an easy lay-up by Waterloo. Kissi called a timeout to get the Rams back on track, and MacDonald (Port Colborne, Ont.) sunk a three-pointer right after the break.

A sloppy first quarter ended with the Rams holding an eight point lead, 23-15. The Warriors did not help themselves in the first, missing eight of their 16 free throws as both teams combined for 15 fouls in the opening 10 minutes.

The teams were fairly even through five minutes of the second. Dayana Gechkova (Sofia, Bulgaria) gave Ryerson its second double-digit lead of the evening with just over four to play, but Laura Bossers (Stratford/) answered with consecutive jumpers while Laura Burnett (Heidelberg/) also tallied a pair, slicing the advantage back down to seven.

However, after Alexandrea Tkaczyk (Cambridge, Ont.) hit a lay-up, Ashley MacDonald's free throw at the end of the second gave Ryerson a 40-29 lead at halftime.

Tilk opened the second half with a defensive rebound, and then proceeded to hit three straight lay-ups as she began taking over underneath the Warriors basket. Burnett nailed a running jumper for Waterloo, but the former OUA all-rookie notched another bucket in the low-post and MacDonald followed suit with a smooth penetration for two points. Kelsey Wright (Brampton, Ont.) drained a couple of free throws as the women spread the advantage to 17 points midway through the period and held what looked to be a 60-42 stranglehold on the game heading into the final quarter.

Waterloo brought full court pressure in the opening minutes of the fourth, leading to three straight turnovers by the Rams in their own end. The Warriors took advantage, chopping the lead to 12 which prompted a timeout from the Ryerson bench.

Coming out of the break, Burnett drained a shot from beyond the arc, and drove to the hoop on the next possession to force a foul from the Rams. She made both free throws, and the lead was suddenly back to single digits after a 13-2 run to start the fourth by Waterloo.

A couple of clutch shots by MacDonald in the middle part of the period kept a buffer between the squads, but Tilk fouled out at with 4:04 left in regulation, giving the Warriors more momentum and creating some anxiety in the final minutes for the Rams.

Marti Killeen (Oakville/) hit both her free throws with just over two minutes left to bring the Warriors within four, and the Rams turned over the ball again on the following possession. Erin Robbins (Kitchener/) got to the line again a minute later for Waterloo, and made the game a one-possession affair with over a minute left on the clock.

MacDonald then made a run up the middle and drained a lay-up before getting to the line four times in the final moments of the contest, sinking three of four attempts to seal the victory.

Burnett led the Warrior attack with 17 points, going 4-for-8 from the field and 8-of-12 from the line.  Second year guard Laura Bossers (Stratford/) contributed with 13 points while rookie Marti Killeen (Oakville/) added 10 points and was strong on the boards gathering in 7 rebounds.
