Student Therapists

Welcome to the University of Waterloo Therapy team website. The focus of the site is to provide student-athletes, coaches, student trainers and other health care professionals information about our clinic, our therapy team and our general philosophy. We hope that you will find the site helpful and informative.

Student trainer applications for the 2023-2024 season are AVAILABLE HERE. Student trainers are essential volunteers of the UW Athletic Therapy clinic and Interuniversity Sport.  Responsibilities include immediate injury assessment and care; pre-event taping, wrapping, and stretching; and athlete injury prevention.  Current Standard First Aid and CPR-C is mandatory. Must be available evenings and weekends.

Applications are Due Mar 22nd. 

Interviews will be held April 9-10th.

1) Maintenance and Supplies

MAINTENANCE

The CIF and PAC clinics require maintenance for smooth operation and general hygiene. Listed below are tasks that should be completed by the student therapists:

a) Whirlpools cleaned Daily w/ cleaner and scrub pad
PAC- 1 hot, 1 cold
CIF- 1 hot, 2 cold
b) Counters cleaned Daily w/ disinfectant 
c) Tables cleaned " "
d) Laundry bin taken to tote desk. Daily if full
e) Clean laundry put away " "
f) Weights/equip neatly stacked " "
g) U/S, massage bottles filled " "
h) Towels out for U/S

SUPPLIES

The Head Athletic Therapist or football therapist will distribute supplies to the student therapists. The student is responsible for recording in the supply book in the CIF or PAC what items were given for their team, the amount and the date. If neither person is present the student trainer can access the required supplies and log the amount taken in the supply book.

2) Student Therapists Responsibilities


Student therapists have many duties and responsibilities, the majority of which are listed below:

- Kits should be kept clean and neat. Do not allow athletes or coaches rummage through kits searching for supplies. You are responsible for all supplies for your team.
-  Pre-event/practice taping/ wrapping/ stretching.
-  Immediate injury assessment and care.
-  On-field injury assessment/ care
-  Pre-event playing area safety checks.
-  Introduce yourself to the visiting team's trainer(s) or staff and the officials before the game. Complete a visitor info sheet and review with the visiting team's trainer(s). Direct them to ice, water, etc.
-  Completing on site injury forms for major injuries i.e. any injury requiring further medical care.
-  Reporting any significant injuries to the Head AT.
-  Perform pre-season concussion scoring for all athletes in collision sports i.e. hky, ftb, rug, soc, bball & field hky 
-  Assist with pre-season physicals for those teams involved. Assist with eye exams, weighing players, collecting money.
-  Ensure that all athletes on his/her team have filled out an athlete info form, medical update form and have a chart in the therapy clinic files.
- Further, he/she is responsible for keeping a copy of the triplicate info form and if applicable the SAC concussion baseline form in the kit at all times in case of medical emergencies.  Dress appropriately for practice and games. Ensure that you are identifiable to officials, players, and coaches. No ripped clothing. Clothing given by the team or therapy team, with black or khaki pants/shorts . Do not wear clothing from other schools to practice or games or in the clinic.
-  Student therapists will be put on a list kept at the equipment desks for access to the key to get into the clinics. You must show your Watcard to get the key.
-  Ensure adequate amounts of ice are available for injuries at games and practice.
-  Help with hydration of athletes.
