Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Warriors clinch Battle of Waterloo Series with big home win over Laurier

It was a big night for women's basketball as they not only defeated their cross-town rivals Laurier Golden Hawks by a score of 74-43 but also clinched the 2022-23 Battle of Waterloo Series with the victory. It was the 13th win for a Warrior team over the Golden Hawks this season, securing the trophy with three games still to be played including another set of basketball games this coming Saturday.

After a slow start by the Warriors where they found themselves down 23-13 with under two minutes to play in the opening quarter, Waterloo found their shooting stroke thanks to a few key baskets from Kaitlyn Overeem (Brantford, ON/) and Summer Pahl (Kitchener, ON/) to cut the deficit to just two after the opening 10.

From there, it was all Waterloo as they outscored the Hawks 52-19 in the final 30 minutes including a 15-1 advantage in the final quarter to secure their 13th win of the season. The Warriors are now 13-4 on the season and have taken over sole possession of first place in the OUA west.

Leading the way for the Warriors in the victory was Overeem who put up a game high 21 points going 7-for-18 from the field with 4 three-pointers while having a perfect 3-for-3 night from the line. Overeem also dished out five assists. Beth Howlett (Burlington, ON/) was next best with 12 points while Summer Pahl (Kitchener, ON/) had 11 and Maddy Adams (Drumbo, ON/) 10.

Waterloo and Laurier will meet again on Saturday at 1pm at the Laurier Athletic Complex. Catch the game live on OUA.tv as the Warriors look for their 14th win of the season.
