Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Warriors improve to 12-4 with a pair of lopsided wins over Algoma

The Warriors women's basketball continued one of their best seasons in program history this past weekend with another pair of victories over the visiting Algoma Thunderbirds.

On Friday night, Waterloo downed the T-Birds by a score of 65-37 for their 11th win of the season. The black and gold were led by Vanessa Hughes (Hamilton, ON/) who added 15 more points to her spectacular season total. Hughes now sits in second spot in the OUA with 18.3 points per game and a staggering 42.6 three point percentage which is the fourth best in Ontario. Maddy Adams (Drumbo, ON/) was next best with nine points in the victory while Beth Howlett (Burlington, ON/), Jaime Newell (Brussels, ON/) and Ghiselle Poblete (Brampton, ON/) all had seven. On the glass, the Warriors were led by Newell who had a game high 12 rebounds.

On Saturday night, Waterloo jumped out to a massive 48-20 lead after the opening half and did not look back en route to the 86-49 win for their 12th win of the season. Summer Pahl (Kitchener, ON/) was on her game in front of a large Fantastic Alumni Day crowd, putting up a double-double with 17 points and 11 boards. Adams had another strong game with 16 points and eight rebounds while Howlett finished with 15 and Kaitlyn Overeem (Brantford, ON/) had eight and added six assists.

The Warriors are now in a tie with Guelph for top spot in the OUA west, each with 12-4 record. Waterloo will be back in action this Wednesday at the PAC as they battle the Laurier Golden Hawks. A victory can clinch the Battle of Waterloo series for the black and gold.
