Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Warriors go 1-1 in final home action of 2022

The Warriors extended their win streak to five games to open the 2022-23 season with a dominating 84-42 win over the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks on Friday night before falling to the No. 4 Queen's Gaels on Saturday night in a hard fought 70-63 loss. The two games were the final home games for Waterloo before the Holiday Break.

On Friday, Waterloo was led by their sharp shooting guard Vanessa Hughes (Hamilton, ON/) who continues to light up the OUA. Hughes had 18 points with four 3-pointers and added four rebounds and one steal. Summer Pahl (Kitchener, ON/) was next best with 16 points while adding a game high 14 rebounds and one steal. Beth Howlett (Burlington, ON/) and Meghan Sharp (Kitchener, ON/) rounded out Waterloo's offensive attack with nine and eight points respectively. The 84 points put up by Waterloo is their most since February 18, 2017 in a game vs. Guelph and their 40-point margin of victory is their largest since they defeated RMC back on January 16, 2004.

On Saturday, Waterloo went toe-to-toe with one of the top teams in the country in Queen's. A slow start to the game where they were outscored 18-4 in the opening quarter, would prove to be the Warriors' downfall as they chased the game from there. Waterloo did even the score midway through the second quarter at 21's and again got within two late in the third quarter (42-40) but never could find the lead over the Gaels.

Hughes was again an all-star for the black and gold with 28 points and four rebounds and now sits third in the OUA with 21.3 points per game. Pahl had a double-double for the second straight game with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Pahl sits fifth in OUA rebounds per game with 9.1. Howlett and Kaitlyn Overeem (Brantford, ON/) both had strong games too with 10 and nine points each while Overeem had seven assists in the loss. Leading the Gaels was Julia Chadwick (19 pts) and Laura Donovan (17 pts).

The Queen's game was a Pizza Promotion where if the men's and women's basketball teams combined for eight 3-pointers the fans would go home with a free large pizza voucher from Domino's. Women's basketball took care of that themselves hitting nine 3-pointers in the game sending the fans home happy.

The Warriors will close out the 2022 calendar year with a pair of road games next weekend, starting with Laurentian in Sudbury on Friday and Nipissing in North Bay on Saturday. Both games are at 6pm.
