Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Northern Sweep! Warriors close out 2022 with a pair of road wins

Women's basketball took care of business up north this past weekend defeating both the Laurentian Voyageurs and Nipissing Lakers to head into the break at 7-1, the best record to this point in a season in program history.

"I'm happy to close out the year on a high note with two road wins," said head coach Jess Roque. "Travelling before exams presents its own challenges but our team always finds a way to handle business on & off the court. So I commend them for their diligence. They're workers and fighters. It's just who they are. We're pleased with our start thus far, but we also know there is still lots for us to prove. We're looking forward to 2023!"

On Friday night against the Voyageurs the Warriors jumped out to a 16-6 lead after the opening quarter and never looked back, cruising to a 12-point (67-55) victory. Waterloo used their size and speed down low, heading to the line for 29 attempts knocking down 22 of those which proved to be the difference in the win.

Vanessa Hughes (Hamilton, ON/) led the way with 19 points, three rebounds and two steals while Kaitlyn Overeem (Brantford, ON/) was also in double digits with 11 points, five assists and three rebounds. Jaime Newell (Brussels, ON/) was big on the glass with 13 rebounds while adding eight points. Summer Pahl (Kitchener, ON/) rounded out Waterloo's scoring with eight points and seven rebounds.

On Saturday, Waterloo took out the Lakers with a near identical score, closing out the calendar year with a 65-57 win. Waterloo went 33.8% from the field while hitting eight 3-pointers and also out rebounded the Lakers 39-32. Hughes had another 17 points in the win, knocking down three from downtown while Overeem hit 11 points for the second straight night. Maddy Adams (Drumbo, ON/) had a double-double with 10 points and 11 boards while Pahl had seven points in the victory.

Waterloo will now enjoy their holiday break with their 7-1 record whichis good for second place in the OUA west, two points back of Guelph (8-0) for first. The black and gold will be back in action in the New Year with a pair of home games against Carleton (January 6) and Ottawa (January 7).
