It was a long time coming for the women's basketball program but the black and gold have got off to their best start to an OUA season since 1985, with a dominating 78-47 road win over the Brock Badgers on Friday night. The win was also 14 years in the making for the black and gold as it was their first time defeating the Badgers in St. Catharines since 2008.
After falling behind 17-14 after one quarter, Waterloo's balanced attack proved too much for the Badgers and Waterloo went off in the middle two quarters outscoring the home side 21-9 in the second and 26-11 in the third to cruise to their fourth win of the season.
As a team, Waterloo shot 43.3% from the field, including a 50% performance in the second half.
Vanessa Hughes (Hamilton, ON/) led the way with 15 points and now sits fourth in OUA points per game with 20.5 ppg.
Kaitlyn Overeem (Brantford, ON/) was next best with 13 points and five assists while
Summer Pahl (Kitchener, ON/) and
Maddy Adams (Drumbo, ON/) each had 11.
Jaime Newell (Brussels, ON/) rounded out Waterloo's attack with nine points. On the glass, Pahl and Newell led the way, each with eight rebounds.
The Warriors will look to extend their perfect start to the season next weekend with a pair of home games, first on Friday night against Ontario Tech (6pm) followed by a battle with Queen's on Saturday at 4pm. Both games can be seen live on OUA.tv.
