Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Warriors drop two tight matches to Mustangs

The women's basketball team had two hard fought games over the weekend with Western but came up short with two single-digit losses to the Mustangs.

On Friday in London, Waterloo and Western went toe-to-toe all game long but it was a third quarter outburst by the Mustangs that was the difference. Western outscored Waterloo 28-19 in that quarter to earn a 86-77 win. All of the other three quarters were even in terms of the score. The Warriors were led by third year guard Kaitlyn Overeem (Brantford, ON/) who had a fantastic game with 22 points going 7-for-14 from the field with three from beyond the arc and 5-of-7 from the free throw line. She also added five rebounds and three assists. Sonja Matthews (Cambridge, ON/) had a nice game off the bench with 12 points while Beth Howlett (Burlington, ON/) had 10. Vanessa Hughes (Hamilton, ON/) led the Warriors with eight rebounds in a losing effort.

On Saturday, Waterloo got off to a slow start with only 20 first half points but came back strong with 16 in the third quarter. However, it was Western who finished strong down the stretch outscoring the black and gold 21-13 in the final quarter to pick up the 55-49 win. Western was led by Ariane Saumure who had a game high 17 points.

For Waterloo Overeem and Maddy Adams (Drumbo, ON/) each had 12 points while Hughes put up 10 and Matthews added nine off the bench. Hughes had another strong game on the boards with nine rebounds while Meghan Sharp (Kitchener, ON/) collected eight and Jamie Newell brought in seven.

Waterloo will look to get back in the win column in their final weekend of action before the Holiday Break as they travel to Sault Ste. Marie to take on the Algoma Thunderbirds. Friday's tipoff is at 6pm while Saturday's goes at 4pm. Catch the action live on OUA.tv.
