The Warriors Field Hockey team had a very solid weekend against Queen's and York coming away with a 1-0 win over the Gaels and a slim 2-1 loss to the Lions who have won the last two OUA Championships.
On Saturday against Queen's on a scorching hot day the Warriors scored early in the first quarter off a great tip from
Taylor Goodhue (St. Thomas/), her third of the year. Neither team could get on the scoreboard for the remainder of the game with lots of back and forth play.
Marley Dowling (Waterloo/) was strong in net with the shutout.
On Sunday that Warriors battled the two-time defending champs, York frustrating the Lions from start to finish. Waterloo scored once again in the first quarter on a beautiful goal by second year Eileen Tudorica (Toronto/), her first of the season. The Warriors let their guard down in the second quarter and the Lions were able to score to even the game at 1's.Â
The black and gold continued their strong play, smothering the Lions offence but they were able to break through again in the third quarter taking the match 2-1.
"We played an outstanding match against the Lions but unfortunately came up short and just could not capitalize on our chances. I am very happy with our level of play and look forward to our rematch against York at home on Oct. 20," said head coach Maria Leahy (Waterloo).
The Warriors are in action next weekend against Guelph (Saturday) and Western (Sunday) in Toronto.Â
