The Warriors field hockey team picked up their first win of the season on Saturday, topping the Western Mustangs 2-1 in Toronto. Waterloo scored two goals in the second half to earn the win.
The Mustangs opened the scoring in the eighth minute as Sabrina Bradshaw found twine to give her squad an early 1-0 lead. Waterloo weathered the storm and took control of the action in the second half.
Kyra Lewis (Goderich/) netted her first career goal in the 42nd minute off of a corner to make it a 1-1 game. Waterloo found the net again in the 59th minute as another rookie,
Miranda Hunter (Mississauga/), got in on the action to put Waterloo up 2-1.
Monique Sidebottom (Ottawa/) stood her ground in net for the remaining 11 minutes as the Warriors took the 2-1 victory.
In Waterloo's afternoon match, McGill scored in the dying seconds off of a corner to hand the Warriors a heartbreaking 4-3 loss. Scoring for the black and gold was
Larissa McLeod (Cambridge/) with one while
Jennifer Mead (Mitchell/) had two, giving her six career goals with the Warriors.
Waterloo will now turn their attention to their home match this Friday at Warrior Field. Before you take off for your Thanksgiving plans, head to Warrior Field on Friday at 5:45 as the Warriors take on Guelph.
