The Waterloo field hockey program opened up their 2016 season in Guelph with three games against the Gryphons, Western and Queen's.
On Saturday in their opening contest Waterloo
fell to the always competitive Guelph Gryphons 7-1. The Warriors made too many errors on the defensive side of the ball that ended up in the back of their net more often than not. The lone bright spot came from
Grace Shimokura (Kanata) (pictured) who scored her first career CIS goal.
The black and gold came back in the afternoon determined to erase their defeat to Guelph and they did just that
earning a 1-1 draw with the Western Mustangs in a rainy affair. Waterloo's goal came off the stick of
Jenna Ridpath (Guelph), also her first career goal.
On Sunday, Waterloo looked for their first win of the season and the Warriors found it by controlling the tempo from start to finish with a
1-0 shutout win over Queen's.
Madeleine Yeomans (Calgary) continued the trend of first career goals as the first year environmental engineering student netted the games lone goal off of a corner.
Waterloo will be in action again next Saturday in Toronto as they battle the York Lions (10:45am) and Varsity Blues (2:15pm).
