Warriors fall just short of OUA bronze medal

The bid for a second straight OUA bronze medal came up just short for the Warriors as Western squeaked out a 1-0 win on Sunday afternoon at TD Waterhouse Stadium in London.

The Warriors had some good opportunities early in this contest, especially one coming off of a corner in the opening half but the black and gold couldn't find the net.

In previous matches Waterloo took out Queen's 1-0 in the OUA quarter-finals thanks to a goal by defender Mitra Zaimi (Waterloo).  Madeleine Yeomans (Calgary) was named the Warrior player of the match while two time OUA goalie of the year Hilary Neeb (Wellesley) picked up the shutout.

In their OUA semifinal game Waterloo fell to Toronto 5-1 but put up a strong fight against one of the top programs in the country.  Waterloo was tied 1-1 at half with the goal coming off the stick of Emma Young (Mississauga) but the Varsity Blues scored four unanswered in the second half to sink Waterloo.  Neeb was named Waterloo's player of the game in that contest.

"I am extremely proud of our girls efforts this year," said head coach Maria Leahy.  "We battled every single game but just didn't get the bounces needed in today's bronze medal match to close out the season on a high note."
