Box Score 2 The Warriors Field Hockey team reached a turning point in the season this weekend with a celebrated 3 wins against Queen's (1-0), York (1-0), and McGill (3-0). After working very hard in practice to elevate and strengthen the offensive play, the victories now place the Warriors in good position for the OUA provincial championships. The Warriors have now won four straight games and look to be in fine form leading up to the final stretch of the season.
Â
The first game of the weekend was played in cold temperatures, high winds, and rain in a tough game against the Queen's Gaels. Queens had won the previous game against the Warriors earlier in the season with a score of 3-0. There was much back-and-forth play in the match with goalkeeper
Hilary Neeb (Wellesley) receiving lots of action and making the necessary saves. After a scoreless first half, the Warriors went out determined in the second half to put some goals in the net. Halfway through the second half,
Alana Raymond (Ajax) netted her first of the season in a perfectly executed short corner by the offensive unit. In the last minute of play, Queen's gained a short corner opportunity and scored a goal that was ultimately called back by the umpires. The corner was then replayed and successfully disrupted by the Warriors defence for a 1-0 finish.
The second match of the day saw the Warriors face the York Lions in what was another strong defensive match. This game was a test of the endurance and strength of the Warrior squad and the black and gold answered. Again scoreless at half, the team went back out and again capitalized on a short corner opportunity, this time with
Stephanie Snyder (Waterloo) finding the back of the net for her 3
rd goal of the season. The Warriors played a conservative defensive style for the remainder of the game, which finished at 1-0. Fourth year goalkeeper
Nickole LeVear (Milton) maintained a strong presence in net from start to finish to preserve the shutout.
Sunday morning, the Warriors headed back to Guelph to play their final game of the weekend against McGill. After a brilliant breakout up the field by several members of the Warriors midfield, forward
Vanessa Guido (Newmarket) ran hard on the right side with the ball before making a hard cross pass to captain
Caitlin Huber (Waterloo). Huber ensured the first goal of the game behind McGill's talented goalie on a perfectly placed shot to open the scoring. The second half saw
Stephanie Snyder (Waterloo) score an unassisted, reverse stick goal that sailed to the top right corner of the net and
Alana Raymond (Ajax) scored a third goal off of a short corner off a deflection for her second of the weekend.
The Warriors will get some much needed rest on a forthcoming bye weekend and then battle the Guelph Gryphons and the Toronto Blues in Toronto on October 19. The Warriors are 5-3-2 nearing the end of the season.
