Gryphons clip Warriors in season opener

Caitlin Huber takes a penalty stroke in the late going of the opening half
Waterloo opened up the OUA field hockey season with a hard fought 3-1 loss to the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday morning at Warrior Field. The Gryphons scored three second half goals to sink the Warriors and pick up their first win of the season.

It was Waterloo who had the early jump with several quality chances around the Guelph net.  Stephanie Snyder (Waterloo/) provided the Warriors with an early opportunity to take the lead but her strike would be turned aside by Guelph keeper Kaye McLagan.

The Warriors would be rewarded late in the opening half with a penalty that would be taken by third year forward Caitlin Huber (Waterloo/).  Unfortunately for the home side the Huber shot would find the post to keep the score locked at zero's heading into the second half.

Guelph would find the opening marker at the 45th minute on a penalty corner which was eventually batted home by Nicole Paola.  The Gryphons would add to their lead 10 minutes later as Alexis Wagner would bat one home past Waterloo netminder Nickole LeVear (Milton/).  LeVear was solid in the contest making quality stops for her black and gold.

The resilient Warriors would not let up in the late going and would finally be rewarded for their hard work as Alana Raymond (Ajax/) would put home a rebound past McLagan putting the pressure back on Guelph.
Waterloo would have one more shot at goal but the Gryphon defence would stand tall and send it back down field securing the victory with an empty net tally by captain Amy Wise.

The Warriors will look to rebound tomorrow morning when they take on McGill at 11:15am on Warrior Field.
