Warriors go 1-0-1 in games with York and McGill

The Waterloo Warriors travelled to Kingston this past weekend. On Saturday afternoon, the team faced the York Lions. The Warriors started the game well; team captain Melissa Lewis (Waterloo/) would open the scoring. After a solo run up the field, she only had the goalkeeper to beat and buried her shot in the 12th minute. Despite having the momentum and play for the remainder of the half, the Warriors could not extend their lead.

The second half was frustrating at the Warriors could not capitalize on opportunities and allowed the Lions to turn the tides within the last 10 minutes of the game. With too many players up the field, York would be able to generate some counter-attacks and scored in the 63rd minute with their only clean shot on net. A point loss as the final result was 1-1.

Determined not to squander more points, the Warriors came out much stronger in their game on Sunday against McGill. After 10 minutes of constant pressure, rookie Jenna Remedios (Ajax/) found herself in the perfect position to put away a rebound opportunity, sliding towards the left post to tuck the ball in.

A mere five minutes later, the Warriors were up 2-0 when Alana Raymond (Ajax/) took a perfectly executed penalty corner and blasted her shot into the left corner. McGill, to their credit, continued to play strong defensively and held UWaterloo off the score sheet until 5 minutes from the end of the 1st half when the Warriors were able to transition the ball well from left back to right back, where Jenny Kennedy (Guelph/) blasted a 50 yard pass to Melissa Lewis (Waterloo/), who beat her defender and then rounded the goalkeeper to slip the ball into an empty net.

The second half proved to be a tougher affair as McGill packed their half and only kept 1 player high which allowed them to keep the score to 3-0 until the 52nd minute; Jenna Remedios (Ajax/) would once again find herself in an ideal position to put away a rebound for a final result of 4-0.

Despite the draw with York, the victory over McGill still allowed the Warriors to move into a tie for third place with both Western and Queen's. The Warriors take on the Gaels October 12th with the hopes of eliminating them in that battle for the higher playoff position.
