The Waterloo field hockey team dropped the OUA gold medal game 4-1 to the Guelph Gryphons on Sunday afternoon at York Stadium to settle for the silver medal. Â Both teams will advance to the CIS Championship starting next Thursday at the University of Victoria.
After shocking the Varsity Blues yesterday with a big 2-0 upset victory Waterloo couldn't match their perfect game plan to take care of the Gryphons. Â Despite the loss the Warriors now know they have the talent and heart to compete with the top field hockey programs in the country.
Guelph got on the board first 11 minutes in on a goal by Crysta Stubbs (Whitney, Ont.), and extended their lead in the 22
nd minute when Allison Chute (Greenfield Park, Que.) found the back of the net for the 2-0 lead at the half.
Â
Guelph continued to control the pace of the game in the second and added to its lead in the 42
nd minute on a goal by Ciara Condon (London, Ont.). Jacqui Amy Tonkin (Esperance, Australia) rounded out the Gryphons scoring in the 57
th minute on a goal off a corner.
Â
Waterloo tallied its only marker of the game just before time expired when
Vanessa Guido (Newmarket/) put the ball in the back of the net in the 69
th minute. Â The Warrior goal was setup beautifully by
Melissa Lewis (Waterloo/) who was around the net all afternoon.
Waterloo will now prepare for the national championship starting on Thursday at UofVic. Â Stay tuned to www.gowarriorsgo.ca for schedule and results.
