Warriors bounce back with 28-10 win over Toronto

Game Summary

The Waterloo women's rugby team put forth a determined effort on Friday night earning a 28-10 win over the Toronto Varsity Blues at the Varsity Centre.

With the win, Waterloo (3-1) bounces back after a 47-0 loss to Guelph last week and sit tied for second with Western in the OUA Shields Divison, while Toronto is now 1-3-0 and tied for fourth in the OUA Russell Division.

All 13 of Toronto's points were scored in the first half. The Blues opened the scoring with a try from first-year player Janessa Doherty (Toronto) 24 minutes into the game.  However, Waterloo responded with a try from Sarah Jane Garland (New Hamburg/) (New Hamburg, Ont.), one of her two in the game.

The Warriors went ahead; however, U of T's Michaella Moore of Holland Landing, Ont., scored a second try near the end of the half to bring the game within three (13-10) at halftime.

Toronto's defensive play helped keep the game close in the second half, stifling multiple attempts by Waterloo early on. However, a try by Briana Cunningham (Waterloo/) (Waterloo, Ont.), and two second half penalty kicks by Nastasha Vrablic (Cambridge/) helped Waterloo extend their lead and secure the win.

Waterloo's next action goes Friday night as they welcome cross-town rivals, Laurier Golden Hawks for a 4pm match at the CIF fields.
