Curling teams capture Laurier Invitational

COMPLETE RESULTS

The Warrior men finished pre-provincial event play with an outstanding record 11 wins 1 loss and 1 tie topping the field at the Wilfrid Laurier K-W Event. Equally as rewarding were the results posted by the Waterloo women who also finished top in the event and ended their pre-provincials with a record of 8 wins, 3 losses and two ties.

Though the results were outstanding it should be noted that in the semifinal game against UOIT vice Ed Cyr curled a perfect game and in the five games a very impressive 87% average. Coupled with almost equally impressive percentage results from Warrior skip Jake Walker (Minden/), the Waterloo squad emerged as the team to beat coming into the OUA Provincial Championships later this month.

In the qualifying three games Waterloo faced Wilfrid Laurier Junior Varsity, Brock and Trent and were handed their only loss in the three events as we faced Wilfrid Laurier Junior Varsity. But for a few key missed shots and the very solid play of opposition skip Robert Wright (Toronto/), the Warriors might have won. Even to the last rock, Waterloo had chances but were unable to best the Laurier team. Following what was the Warriors first loss, the men bounced back with solid victories over Brock and Trent earning second place in their pool and a spot in the Sunday morning semifinal.

Sunday was all Warriors as they faced and won against UOIT and then dominated the final game against Wilfrid Laurier's varsity men. Outstanding play and a well-deserved 85% mark in their semi-final was led by vice Ed Cyr who posted a perfect game. It may be noted that in 14 years as a varsity coach this is the first perfect game thrown by any Warrior. Though Jake Walker (Minden/)'s 80% is also impressive, but for one end, his percentage would have been over 90%.

The team also played exceptionally well in their final game against perennial rivals Wilfrid Laurier playing their varsity team. This was all Waterloo easily defeating the Golden Hawks in a 4-end blow out 10-0. In this final all four members of the Warriors got their games in gear posting a team high 88% for the game and equally as impressive numbers from Ed Cyr at 91% and Jake Walker (Minden/) at 97%. Combine these numbers with equally as rewarding percentages from lead James Freeman (Brantford/) and fifth Nathan Ransom (Sioux Lookout/) (who played the event in second spot) and the Warriors emerged victorious.
