Warriors go 1-2 in weekend action at Downsview Park

After taking the Thanksgiving Day weekend off, the Warriors Field Hockey team was back in action at Downsview Park in Toronto.

The first game was against the host, York Lions.  Waterloo were able to hold the Lions off the board and fortunate to head into the half-time break leading 1-0 after a Jessana Wartman (Cambridge/) penalty corner hit deflected up and over everyone into the net.

The Warriors picked up the play in the second half and extended the lead at the 44th minute mark when Melissa Lewis (Waterloo/) added to her team leading goal tally. Less than five minutes later, Courtney Bisch (Wellesley/) scored on some good passing play between the forwards to make it 3-0. With ten minutes left, rookie netminder Kaylee Lock-O'Connor (Hamilton/) made her OUA debut but her team let up in the last five minutes allowing York to take away a clean sheet. Final: 3-1 Waterloo.

After only a game break, the Warriors were back to the turf to play against the Western Mustangs, who have always provided a stern test. This second game of the day would prove no different as again, it was the opposition who started the stronger of the two teams with Western taking a 1-0 lead into half.

The Warriors tried to open things up in the second half and while this resulted in some better chances, it also allowed Western to generate good counter-attacking opportunity. One of these resulted in a penalty stroke called against Waterloo, but Nickole LeVear (Milton/) stood her ground and kept the team's chances alive. With 10 minutes remaining, Western got a second goal off a break-away where goalie LeVear had to deal with two attackers on her own. Despite battling until the end, Waterloo couldn't find the net and fell by a score of 2-0.

The Warriors were back to Downsview on Sunday to face the Guelph Gryphons and it was was Guelph who would took the lead after fortunate bounces allowed for a counter-attack where netminder Hilary Neeb (Wellesley/) conceded a penalty stroke.

The Warriors were creating scoring chances of their own but the uneven turf was proving to undo all the hard work as botched penalty corners and passes into the circle allowed Guelph to re-group and get numbers back in defense.

The Gryphons were able to execute their penalty corners, scoring two more goals from those set plays at the 43rd and 68th minute marks.  The Warriors can take consolation away with the fact they weren't kept off the score sheet when they finally got a shot off on their fourth penalty corner, when Courtney Bisch (Wellesley/) scored her fourth goal of the campaign at the 64th minute. Final score: 3-1 for Guelph.

The team travels to Kingston on Friday for their last two games of the regular season as they take on Queen's and McGill on Saturday, October 20 before they host the OUA Championships Friday, October 26 to Sunday, October 28 at Warrior Field.
