Warriors defeat York, fall to Guelph and McGill in tight matches

Saturday, Sept. 24 vs. Guelph @ Toronto
Guelph 2, Waterloo 1

The Warriors travelled to Toronto this weekend for three more OUA games at Varsity Stadium.
In the first match, Waterloo took on the defending OUA Champions, the University of Guelph Gryphons.

The Warriors came out of the gates flying and dominated the play for the first 20 minutes. Despite having several good runs into the scoring area, the last touch was missing and a monstrous shot by Kara Moro (Port Moody/) hitting the cross-bar seemed to ring in the changing of the tides. The Warriors were starting to get frustrated with not leading and began abandoning some of the play which had worked so successfully in dominating possession and territory. As such, the Gryphons were slowly gaining a foothold and looked dangerous on counter-attack opportunities. The score remained 0-0 at half.

The Gryphons would get on the board early in the second half due to a couple defensive mistakes by the Warriors as Alison Little would notch the goal for Guelph. This woke the Warriors up and while possession was back and forth, more of the play was within the Guelph half and the score was tied at the 55th minute mark after some impression passing between rookie Stephanie Snyder (Waterloo/) and Melissa Lewis (Waterloo/) led to Lewis' second goal of the season. It appeared as if the final result would be a draw but the Gryphons score on a direct penalty corner hit in the 62nd minute off the stick of Brittany Seidler.

Saturday, Sept. 24 vs. York @ Toronto
Waterloo 2, York 0

The team was back to the field in the afternoon for a 2:45pm match with York. Coach Rodrigues made some roster changes and rookie net-minder Nickole LeVear (Milton/) got the chance to experience her first OUA game. Despite some shaky moments due to her defenders getting drawn into playing too aggressively, she held her ground and made the saves required of her.

The Warriors played with determination and were prepared for the physical battle with a tenacious York squad, being rewarded in the 23rd minute when Courtney Bisch (Wellesley/) scored on a penalty corner. Things were tight for the rest of the first half and most of the second half, until the Warriors were able to finally put the game to rest after some nice passing between Stephanie Snyder (Waterloo/) and Melissa Lewis (Waterloo/) again resulted in a goal, this time for fifth year Meghan Bester (Waterloo/) to secure a 2-0 victory for the black and gold.

Sunday, Sept. 25 vs. McGill @ Toronto
McGill 3, Waterloo 2

Waterloo would return to Toronto to play an early morning match against McGill on Sunday morning. The game started off with tentative play as McGill and Waterloo were yet to see each other in the 2011 OUA season resulting in a 0-0 first half.

The Warriors came out strong in the second half and after swift build-up with each midfielder and forward touching the ball, Waterloo was ahead with Kara Moro (Port Moody/) opening up her account for the 2011 campaign. 20 minutes later, Melissa Lewis (Waterloo/) scored from yet another assist by Stephanie Snyder (Waterloo/) and the team was starting to feel relaxed.

However, this quickly changed when Camille St-Cyr of McGill scored on a penalty corner two minutes later after a weird deflection off of Katie Farrugia's stick allowed the ball to trickle over the line.  McGill would tie the score five minutes later after another penalty corner goal this time by Maria Oswald.

McGill would then score the game winning goal five minutes later off the stick of Sarah Main who was on the right end of some unfortunate bounces for the Warriors.

With only two minutes remaining in the game, the Warriors worked extremely hard to get another goal and despite a couple of very good deflection chances and penalty corners, McGill's goaltender and defense stood firm and came out with the three points to send them into third place in the standings.

Waterloo look to regroup as they face the Queen's Gaels and York Lions next weekend in Kingston.
