The Waterloo women's rugby team opened up their season with a 15-5 victory on the road against the Brock Badgers on Saturday afternoon. The Warriors showed their speed and strength early and often to pick up a crucial game one victory in a season of five regular season matches.
After some back and forth play Waterloo jumped out to a 7-0 lead at the 26th minute when fifth year forward Kaley Maksymyk (Cambridge/) scored the Warriors first try of the season followed by a successful convert by second year lock Megan Colwell (Spencerville/).
The score would remain 7-0 for the Warriors heading into the second half when Brock would cut into the lead off a try from third year scrumhalf Teal Narraway (Stittsville, Ont.) who broke through the Waterloo defensive line and scored her first try of the season making the score 7-5 Waterloo.
Two minutes later, Waterloo was awarded a penalty and Colwell was successful on her kick from 20 yards out to give her team a 10-5 lead.
In the 51st minute, Waterloo senior Savannah Gentile (Oakville/) rounded out the scoring when she pounded the ball in for another try to secure the 15-5 victory for the black and gold.
Next up for the Warriors (1-0) is a meeting with cross-town rivals Laurier Golden Hawks at Laurier on Saturday, September 17 at 1:00pm.
