Field Hockey

Field hockey team earns two crucial shutout victories

The Warriors had a true road trip this past weekend as they travelled to Kingston to take on the Queen's University Golden Gaels at their home field on Saturday afternoon, and then York on Sunday morning.

Despite a long drive, the Warriors came out strong against Queen's and Meghan Bester (Waterloo/) scored her second goal of the year off a penalty corner in the fourth minute of play.  A few minutes later, the ball was in the back of the Queen's net again after a nice reverse stick shot by Kara Moro (Port Moody/). However, the umpires felt there had been an infraction prior to the shot and didn't allow the goal to stand. Momentum from that point on began to switch as several more fouls went against Waterloo and frustration began to show.  As such, Queen's were able to get into the game and had an equal amount of the possession and territory, as the first half ended with Waterloo up by one.

In the second half Waterloo started to dominate the game and dictate where the ball went on the field, and in the 51st minute, Bester scored her second goal of the game to put the Warriors up 2-0. Less than 10 minutes later, a third Waterloo goal was scored by Olena Ryzhyk (Mississauga/) (her goal as a Warrior) off a penalty corner. Shortly after, Courtney Bisch (Wellesley/), after hitting the post twice and having a shot saved on the line by a Queen's defender, got her fifth of the year from yet another penalty corner. Then, Meghan Bester (Waterloo/) completed her hat-trick four minutes from the final whistle to bring an end to a decisive 5-0 victory for the Warriors.

After a nice rest, the Warriors were back to Tindall Field for their second match of the season against York. Despite an ugly start to the half, the Warriors were able to generate one penalty corner in the first half and scored on it, with rookie Stephanie Snyder (Waterloo/) scoring from a reverse stick flick in close. From then onwards, play was between the 25 yard lines with neither team able to get a shot on net with the score 1-0 for Waterloo at halftime.

The second half would prove more of the same, with most of the play taking place outside the D-zone. The Waterloo defence stood firm and didn't allow a single shot on net. York also held their own and if not for a couple of extremely good saves from the Lions goaltender, the Warriors might have been able to put in two more goals. After a tense last 10 minutes, the final whistle was blown and 1-0 was the final result.

With a couple of McGill losses and the two victories, the Warriors temporarily took over third place in the OUA standings. This week will prove short as the team will be back on the road on Friday with a couple of games down in London against Western and Toronto.
