Warriors move up standings

Win 2 of 3 weekend games

Having had their momentum stopped last Friday, the Warriors travelled to Downsview Park this past weekend for their final OUA league games with the hopes of gaining some vital wins in order to place third in the final standings.

The Warriors were more than ready for their first game on Saturday, against the defending OUA Champions Guelph but could not have gotten off to a worse start. Within the first minute of play, the Waterloo defense allowed current top scorer, Brittany Seidler, to dribble from the 50 yard line right into the D and flip a shot over goaltender Bronwen Clayfield-Jewett (Waterloo/). However, team pride was strong and the Warriors just got set to resume the game and put that early set-back behind them.

The team battled hard and had some attacking opportunities of their own but were very aware of the Guelph counter-attack; one of which resulted in a penalty corner at the 20th minute mark. The Gryphons were able to convert on it and then minutes later, another counter-attack goal allowed Guelph to lead 3-0. Waterloo went into half-time frustrated as they had controlled most of the game and actually penetrated the attacking circle more times than Guelph but had nothing to show from it.

The Warriors stepped up their play in the second half and in addition to possession, were starting to gain the advantage in territory.  Guelph were awarded another penalty corner midway through the second half and increased their lead but the Warriors came right back and Meghan Bester (Waterloo/) finally put the ball into the net. Guelph scored on yet another counter-attack just before the final whistle for a final 5-1 scoreline in favour of the Gryphons.

Still upset from the morning result, the Warriors took to the field again for the last game of the day on Saturday against Queen's. Despite the earlier loss, the Warriors still had the chance to place third by the end of the weekend and needed a victory to keep those hopes alive. As such, the team came out very strong and were determined to make a statement.

Natalie Chemij (Mississauga/) scored her first goal of the season in the sixth minute and despite constant pressure, Waterloo had to wait until the 23rd minute before getting their second goal, as rookie Alana Raymond (Ajax/) scored a superb goal, deflecting a penalty corner shot up into the roof of the net. A mere five minutes later, the Warriors were up by three as another freshman, standout Stephanie Snyder (Waterloo/), drilled her penalty corner hit into the bottom right corner.

The second half resulted in more dominant play by the Warriors as Queen's could not deal with the pressure nor fend off the energized attackers. Melissa Lewis (Waterloo/) scored on a penalty corner in the 52nd minute and Meghan Bester (Waterloo/) netted her second goal of the day two minutes later to put the Warriors ahead by five. Queen's managed to keep a clean sheet for the remaining 15 minutes as the final score was 5-0 with Waterloo picking up a valuable three points.

Back to Downsview on Sunday afternoon for their final game of the regular season, the Warriors were pumped up to gain revenge for the surprise loss to McGill last month. The team from Montreal had loss on Saturday to Western but came back to beat York earlier in the day and so, they currently held third place in the OUA standings. A victory for the Warriors would mean they jump ahead of McGill for third spot.

Both teams started out strongly but the Warriors were starting to find rhythm. The players were able to put McGill under pressure and take away any form of structured attack. But, McGill were still getting counter-attack opportunities and one resulted in a penalty corner at the eigth minute mark.

After a well-executed deflection, McGill were ahead 1-0. This did not change things for the Warriors, who stuck with their game plan and were rewarded in the 30th minute for their 2:1 ratio of attacking circle penetrations as Courtney Bisch (Wellesley/) tied the game with her sixth goal of the season making the score 1-1 at halftime.

With the feeling that momentum was definitely on their side, the Warriors came out with even more intensity in the second half and didn't allow McGill any sustained possession nor any real threat from counter-attack.

Fifteen minutes into the second period, Waterloo were awarded a penalty corner where Alana Raymond (Ajax/) scored an almost identical goal to the one she had put in the day before.  Two minutes later, Meghan Bester (Waterloo/) increased the lead to 3-1. McGill were beginning to concede and the Warriors were thriving on the attack as they were able to penetrate the defense time after time (for a ratio of 3:1 now) and Alana Raymond (Ajax/) put the game to rest with her second of the day (third of the weekend) with five minutes remaining. As the final whistle blew, the Warriors knew they had done what they set out to do and put themselves in the best possible position to place third in the OUA Standings.

While the Warriors are done with their league play and are guaranteed a position in the playoffs, they still have to wait one week before they find out whether they place third or fourth in the final standings. All the other universities have games on October 22.

The OUA Championships take place the following week in Guelph, with the quarter-final games on Friday, October 28.
