Field hockey team blanked by Western and Toronto

Friday, Oct. 7 vs. Western @ Western
Western 1, Waterloo 0

Friday, Oct. 7 vs. Toronto @ Western
Toronto 3, Waterloo 0

The Warriors lost both of their Friday afternoon games played at TD Waterhouse Stadium on the campus of Western.  In their first match the Warriors were shutout by the host Mustangs 1-0 and followed it up with yet another shutout loss to Toronto 3-0.

Waterloo started out strong against Western and had a chance to take the lead within the first minute but were denied by some determined defending. Western showed their scrappiness and put pressure on Warrior players whenever they had the chance and as a result, there were many turnovers during the first half. Play all over the pitch was a bit frantic and this resulted in few scoring opportunities. As a result, the score at half-time was 0-0.

Western would take the lead at the 63rd minute off of a penalty which was deflected pass Bronwen Clayfield-Jewett (Waterloo/) by her own defender's stick. Despite added pressure and offensive thrust for the final five minutes, the Warriors were not able to find the equalizer and Western earned a 1-0 victory on home soil.

After only an hour's rest, the Warriors were back out on the field for the warm-up for their second match of day against the league leading University of Toronto. Due to several injuries, head coach Steven Rodrigues was not able to make many changes to the line-up and hoped that fatigue would not set in.

Waterloo started out very well defensively and were able to hold their opponents at bay but had a tough time finding attacking opportunities on the counter-attack.  Toronto would take a 1-0 lead at the 27th minute on a breakaway goal.  Just before halftime, another slight breakdown and confusion as to the amount of time remaining in the period allowed another point-blank change and Toronto made no mistake taking a 2-0 lead into half.

The second half was more of the same, with solid defending by the Warriors but a lack on numbers in their attack.  Fatigue started to show from constant defending and the Warriors were unable to mount enough offensive pressure to get on the board.  The Blues added a late goal to take the game 3-0 and remain undefeated at 9-0.

The Warriors currently sit in the fourth and final playoff spot with a 4-5-0 record with three games remaining in the season to be played next weekend at Downsview Park in Toronto against Guelph, Queen's and McGill.
