Warriors blank Marauders to claim OUA bronze

The Warrior women's rugby team defeated the McMaster Marauders 42-0 to claim the OUA bronze medal on Saturday afternoon at the CIF fields in Waterloo.

Following a hard-fought lost to the Queen's Gaels in the OUA semifinals, the Warriors showed their heart and determination battling for every inch of the field to win the bronze medal match.

Waterloo deserved a better fate in the game versus the Gaels but would shrug off the tough match and ensured a victory was saved for their last game of the season.  “It's always nice to finish the season on a winning note and we (the girls) deserved this one,” mentioned all-star 8-man Sam Eyles (Erin, Ont.).

The black and gold controlled the play from start to finish.  They would score early in the first half and not look back on a windy day in Waterloo.

Fifth year Caitlin Martin (Teeswater, Ont.) who concluded her women's rugby career at Waterloo on a winning note scored two tries and once again led her Warriors to victory.  Fourth year Eyles added two of her own while third year lock Cassandra Collins (Brockville, Ont.) also added two to lead the charge for the Warriors.

Adding single tries was third year flanker Shannon Holder (Waterloo, Ont.) and first year winger Valerie Bigelow (Thornhill, Ont.).  Bigelow would also add a convert to round out the scoring.

Shiels division coaches of the year Jay and Leslie Shaw were thrilled to see their girls win bronze and have a lot of momentum going into next season.
