Warriors clinch third place with two weekend wins

Kara Moro out battles the defending Western Mustang player

Oct. 22 vs. Western
Waterloo 2, Western 0

Having secured a playoff position last weekend, the Warriors hosted Western University in a must win game for both teams in the hunt for third place. The winner of the game would take on Dalhousie in the OUA quarter-final match up next weekend pending several results throughout weekend play at St. David's field.

The Warriors were pumped up for their Saturday morning game and came out strong off the opening whistle. Western fought back and if not for some spectacular saves by Bronwen Clayfield-Jewett (Waterloo, Ont.), would have led at half-time.

The Warriors opened the scoring five minutes into the second half as Kara Moro (Port Moody/) scored off a corner to give Waterloo the crucial opening goal and lead.

Following some physical play from the Mustangs the Warriors remained focus on the scoreboard and netted their second of the game as Natalie Chemij (Mississauga, Ont.) scored her second of the season past a screened Western goalie. That was all Waterloo needed as they went on to defeat the Western Mustangs 2-0. Clayfield-Jewett made timely saves to secure the shutout and 3 points for the Warriors.

Oct. 22 vs. Toronto
Toronto 7, Waterloo 2

The Warriors used the opportunity to rest several Waterloo starters who had worked extremely hard in the win over Western and brought in six fresh legs for the game against Toronto.

The Warriors opening the scoring just two minutes into the game as Meghan Bester (Waterloo, Ont.) scored on a penalty corner to give Waterloo the lead. The Toronto Varsity Blues would even the score immediately following the Bester goal and add two more quick goals to take a 3-1 lead before the 15 minute mark of the first half.

After coming out strong with hard running and pressing in the second half, fatigue was beginning to set it for the Warrior players who had left almost everything on the field in the morning game against Western. Toronto started to gain control of the game and find space in dangerous areas scoring four more goals to take a 6-1 lead. Emily Thomson (Oliver, BC) would add one more goal for the Warriors of a penalty corner but it was too little too late as the Varsity Blues defeated Waterloo 7-2 on a raining Saturday afternoon game.

Oct. 23 vs. Carleton
Waterloo 6, Carleton 2

Arriving at St. David's field on Sunday morning to find Guelph were leading York at half-time, the Warriors were getting very excited about the prospect of claiming 3rd place. The warm-up was intense and all the players were focussed on the task at hand.

After cheering Guelph for defeating York 5-1, the Warriors started their own battle cry and began putting a lot of pressure on the Carleton team in order to get a goal early on in the game. Carleton once again played tough defensively and along with a couple of disallowed goals, were able to make things frustrating for the Warrior forwards.

Jessana Wartman (Cambridge, Ont.), with her first of the year, finally put Waterloo ahead 10 minutes into the game from a penalty corner and kick started an eventful first half. Jaimie Wey (Kitchener, Ont.) scored a couple minutes later off another penalty corner but Carleton quickly replied from a penalty corner of their own when the ball just seemed to bounce their way for a rebound opportunity the Warriors defenders had no chance of getting reaching. Another goal that was not allowed started to make things tense but Meghan Bester (Waterloo/) handled the pressure and scored her 6th of the season to make the half-time score a more comfortable 3-1.

Carleton once again pulled within one goal of the Warriors in the second half however Waterloo would regain the two goal lead with a superb baseline drive on the left side by Kara Moro (Port Moody, Ont.). This play ignited the rest of the team and all the players regained focus and determination to control the next 15 minutes. Jaimie Wey (Kitchener/) scored her fifth of the year on a similar baseline move on the left and Kara capped the game (and a fine season) off with a 50 yard run right up the middle of the field to score her 11th and make the final result 6-2.

With the win the Warriors secured third place and will face Dalhousie in the OUA quarter-finals at Donwsview Park (York University hosting) on Friday, October 29th at 2:00 pm.
